news paper subscription

We are subscribing to the Times of India for the second consecutive

year now and the paper is value for money, with the subscription amount

way below the printed price of the paper. For the fourth consecutive

now, a game is being played in the front page of the Times of India

newspaper.The name of the numbers game is called "Tambola".It is really

exciting to play it with very little of any particular attention from

the reader. over a period of a week the participant has to keep track

of the numbers published in the front page of Times of India, and

circle the number in the ticket that is attached each sunday. If at the

end of the week all the numbers published in the ticket is encircled,

then the reader can approach the times house in chennai to claim a

prize from the newspaper. Till now i have been unsuccesfull , one week

i even tried to increase my chances of getting a prize by buying nine

copies of the sunday issue, in which the tickets are attached, and t

hat week i was unable to completely encircle numbers in all the nine of

the tickets.

A Recent news item surprised me, it was about the launching of the

india's first nuclear submarine "Arihant". A lot of secrecy seems to

have been maintained. This should have been a big project and a lot of

people might have been involved in it, and still only bits of info

seems to have leaked to the mainstream media. This in itself seems to

me , an achievement. Now India also has become one of the countries

that has the capability to manufacture nuclear submarine(this is a

small submarine in comparison to what is possessed by the big developed

nations).I'm Sure this kind of project might have been guessed by the

magazines devoted towards defence and security.But the general public

probably do not access to them, due to their high cost?.

Ambulance

Today as i was driving through the Guindy fly over i came across a

military ambulance vehicle, where the letters "AMBULANCE",were written

in the front side, in such a way as it would be seen if the letters

were seen through a mirror. Only after some time i realised that, it

was very thought ful idea, since any ambulance vehicle has to go fast

and there is a necessity to tell the vehicle that is travelling in

front, that the vehicle that is coming behind is an ambulance

vehicle.so if the driver driving in front sees through his rear view

mirror the letters would appear to him as 'AMBULANCE',THAT IS Printed

in the front side of the ambulance vehicle. A great idea indeed.

Now that there is incidence of swine flu in chennai too, i always make

it a point to take a bath every day after coming to house from

office,because sometimes i need to travel in bus and train as part of

office work and i want to make sure that iam clean before i interact

with the family members in the house. this kind of precaution is

necessary i feel to make a safe living environment in the house.

recently i came to know that you could browse the net from the local

post office too. a stand alone touch screen cum key board based

computer has been installed in many post offices in chennai like the

St. Thomas mount head post office, airport postoffice, and many

important post offices.the cost of browsing is about Rupees.15/- for

half an hour ,if i remember correctly. it is really fast and the only

hitch is that the keys in the key board is made of steel and it is

really fused within the key board itself. it has been designed for

rough use and dust proof usage.it is a nice and handy way of sending a

fast and urgent message at a fraction of the cost , that would have

been incurred if the same message has been sent through a telegram. the

only necessity i feel is the ability to type to type in the QWERTY key

board.

about the japanese language.

now i'm learning the japanese language both the script and the spoken ,

and i'm learning for appearing for the level III of JLPT exam. it is

really tough when compared to the level IV EXAM. I FEEL I WOULD HAVE TO

PUT IN EXTRA EFFORT TO LEARN THE VOCABULARY AND THE SCRIPT OF KANJI.

from now on wards it appears to me that i have to put in more effort

and the actual classes is only for clarifying the doubts that i might

come across while learning the japanese language.

I HAVE TRIED TO POST A BLOG IN THE PAGE, but i have't been able to do due to the lack of a floppy drive port in my computer, recently i got a memory stick as a gift from my brother in law and so here iam uploading what i typed from my computer onto the blog from a public computer. The climate is hot in chennai even in august. the days are very hot and in the evenings the humidity plays spoil sport, with the onset of the sea breeze around three thirty or so. The supply of potable water has become a problem this year,with the late onset of monsoons. further the ground water also is almost non existent in and around chennai,with only few lucky wells having usable water. people are queing up in front of municipal and corporation water taps to fill up their utensils with what ever water that is up for grabs. This is a sorry state of affairs and people are forced to put up with the inconvenience.

About Roads in Thane West

I Walked the way from the Thane railway station to Thane west during the early morning hours and i was struck by the way the raods are laid with concrete blocks for big junctions where the buses have to take steep turns, and just plain tar roads for straight roads and sometimes even concrete roads too. this it appeared to me to follow some logic. the concrete blocks are hard and can withstand the wear and tear of the erosion made with the bus tyres. while the concrete road is very resistant to the corrosive effect of running water too(If iam correct).another thing i observed was that these concrete block paved roads were laid only at places where there is a sloping angle to the road, this enables the rain water to run away and not stagnate and i found this arrangement to be a very clever piece of civil engineering.Because stagnant water is more corrosive than running water.

travelling in a train during summer

i booked a ticket to mumbai from chennai and i could have made a specific request for an upper berth ticket, whereas i was allotted the middle berth. the disadvantage is that i could not sleep whenever i wanted to,and has to get the consent of the person occupying the lower berth before i put the middle berth for sleeping. another disadvantage is that the hot winds makes life miserable for the travellers wearing a thin white cotton cloth , whereas i was wearing a jeans pant and a thick cotton t-shirt.when i slept in the middle berth either on my back or on my sides, the portion of the body that is in touch with the rexin seats is wet due to sweating.to compound the matters the fan is running in the ceiling and helping to blow the hot air that is collected at the top back to the passengers who are travelling. a suggestion was said by a fellow co. passenger, as follows, when ever a train stops at a big junction arrangements can be made to spray water on top of the ceiling of the train compartments, then the compartment can get cooler due to evaporation of the water. it appeared to be a good suggestion to me. and can be tried at railway station where the water tanks in the latrines are refilled in major junctions.

I was travelling with my Uncle from Chembur to Thane West and my uncle pointed out to me the Back waters where the sea water surges into the land where salt is being made using the surge of sea water during high tide. considering the fact that the price of land in Mumbai is always very high, i was wondering how these kind of prime land very next to the express way are left vacant, it appears that if sufficient land is not kept for the sea water to enter then there might be accumulation of sand and over a period of time the pressure gets built up from the sea water and one fine day there might be a tidal wave incursion inwards on to the constructed buildings that has the potential to cause lot of damage to life and materials. further i was able to see lot of vegetation on the area supposedly meant for salt water incursion, which means that there are plants that can withstand the salt water habitat of the sea. these kind of vegetation can be encouraged on these waste lands and atleast the atmosphere gets cleaner. further another observation that i made was to the right of the Express way ,ie. on the sea ward side the atmosphere was clear and i was able to see the buildings on the navi mumbai side , where as on the mainland side, the atmosphere was hazy with lot of pollution. So it makes sense to have more of this open natural land. it is really a surprise that even this much land is made available for natural sea water to come and go. Another thing i observed when i went for a walk on the Sanjay Gandhi National Park,Thane was that the greenery till midway on a steep hill slope to the western side of the enterance to the Sanjay Gandhi National Park was barren. i heard from my uncle that the population of Leopards has multiplied three times in the last six years and there is not enough prey for these leopards and hence they approach the villages for easy prey like children playing in the Padas. These Leopards venture to places like vasanth vihar too and one of the leopards even came int the security cabin in one of the apartment blocks. all these might be due to the lack of proper routes for the animals to move form one green cover to another.
